Population by gender/age

Remarks

The age dependency ratio is the ratio of the number of persons at an age when they are generally economically inactive divided by the number of persons of working age. In the first variant working age is defined as 15 to 64 years and in the second variant as 20 to 59 years. In the figure above the first variant is presented.

The ratio is based on the population on 1 January, which is equal to the number of inhabitants of a given area on 1 January of the year in question (or in some cases on 31 December of the previous year).

Data are collected by Eurostat from the National Statistical Offices. National annual estimates of the population are based either on the most recent census adjusted by the components of population change produced since the last census, or based on population registers.
