Mental and behavioural disorders include a broad range of diseases and disorders differing in aetiology and/or type of dysfunction or disability. They include affective or emotional disturbance, behavioural dysregulation and cognitive dysfunction or impairment. Mental and behavioural disorders can be of biological or psychological origin. Two disorders presented here are dementia and depression. Dementia is caused by disease of the brain and is characterised as a disturbance of multiple higher cortical functions. Depression is characterised by a change in affect or mood.
