    Total unemployment is an important indicator of socio-economic differences in health. There is a strong causal relationship between unemployment and poverty, which has been shown to be detrimental to one’s health. Especially long-term unemployment has detrimental health effects. This can be attributed to its economic, social and psychological consequences, to substantial reduction of disposable income and loss of social.

          Remarks

          In line with the International Labour Office (ILO) definition, the above presented unemployment rates represent the number of unemployed persons as a percentage of the labour force or the total number of employed and unemployed persons aged 25 to 74. Unemployed persons comprise here persons aged 25 to 74 who:

          • are without work;
          • are available to start work within the next two weeks; and
          • have been actively seeking work in the past four weeks or had already found a job to start within the next three months.
