  • Childhood vaccinations

Childhood vaccination is a classical prevention strategy which should be maintained to continue effective protection. In most countries the vaccination strategy includes vaccination against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, Hib, measles, mumps and rubella. Not all countries implement vaccination against tuberculosis and hepatitis B on a systematical basis.

          Remarks

Vaccins against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus are combined in a cocktail, therefore percentages of infants vaccinated against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus are the same (see WHO Vaccine Preventable Diseases Monitoring System for country specific vaccination schedules).

Diphtheria: percentage of infants reaching their first birthday in the given calendar year who have been fully vaccinated against diphtheria (3 doses of DPT or DT). Data are reported annually to, and available from, the CD unit at WHO-Europe.

          Remarks

Hepatitis B: percentage of infants reaching their first birthday in the given calendar year who have been fully vaccinated against hepatitis B. Data are reported annually to and available from the CD unit at WHO-Europe.

The number of countries with universal immunization of neonates and infants has increased. In 2003 Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithouania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain targeted newborn babies or infants.

Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg (if not vaccinated as child) and Slovenia targeted older children or adolescents.

Germany, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK, Iceland and Danmark have not introduced universal immunization against hepatitis B. These countries have very low endemicity and consider hepatitis B to be a limited public health problem, thus not justifying additional expense. These countries choose to provide hepatitis B vaccine only to well-defined risk groups, in addition to screening pregnant women to identify and immunize neonates exposed to hepatitis B infection (WHO Vaccine Preventable Diseases Monitoring System, 2007; WHO, 2006b).

Tuberculosis: percentage of infants reaching their first birthday in the given calendar year who have been fully vaccinated against tuberculosis (BCG, 1 dose). Data are reported annually to, and available from, the CD unit at WHO-Europe.

Not all EU-27 countries implement universal BCG vaccination of newborns. Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Slovakia implement universal BCG vaccination of newborns (at birth or <12 months). Malta, France, Norway, United Kingdom and Greece implement BCG vaccination for children in older age groups. Sweden, Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, Cyprus and Italy implement BCG vaccination only for certain risk groups (such as children born in or originating from countries with high prevalence). Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg and Spain do not systematically use BCG vaccination (Infuso et al., 2006; WHO Vaccine Preventable Diseases Monitoring System, 2007).
