    Cardiovascular diseases are characterised by pathological changes in the circulatory system of the body, i.e. the heart muscle and the blood vessels. This group of diseases includes hypertension (elevated blood pressure); ischaemic heart disease, including myocardial infarction; cerebrovascular disease, including stroke; peripheral vascular disease; rheumatic heart disease; congenital heart disease; and cardiomyopathies.
